Abstract:
In a volatile business environment, fast and low cost adaptation of information systems to continuously changing business requirements becomes a major issue for any organization. Service-orientation has proven to be a viable solution to this problem, which explains the popularity of Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA) both in literature and among major players in the software market. The composite structure of applications built upon SOA principles allows for unprecedented flexibility, which recommends SOA as an architectural solution that suits business information systems. Nevertheless, SOA cannot possibly be a guarantee of organizational agility, as long as service-orientation is not approached from a business point of view, regardless of the standards and technologies available at present. This paper adopts a business-oriented perspective on SOA, for the purpose of delivering a critical overview of current modeling methodologies, as well as a possible solution for service and business process modeling.
