Abstract:
Most of the decision makers in today's business world are facing frequently the pressure to make critical business decisions without timely access to reliable and relevant information on the operational and financial performance of their business. More than that, even if access to information is there, the capability of personalization and selection from large quantity of data is often missing. This is why Business Intelligence becomes such an exciting subject.

In order to achieve better strategic goals, business intelligence has to provide employees with the right information at the right time. To make this happen, a business intelligence solution should be comprehensive, secure, integrated with all operational systems (in both ways, as capture of data and as feed-back is concerned) and always available. In concrete terms, business intelligence process manages to help decision makers by providing data models, statistical analysis and forecasting for comprehensive data analysis.

The present paper is trying to present how we can transform existing data, gathered from different data sources in powerful managerial information, integrating “business intelligence” techniques, thought Microsoft SQL Server 2005. The article is structured in three parts.

The first part defines business intelligence (BI) and what is the significance of BI. First, the structure of the BI and who are the principal users of a BI solution are presented. Then, the article presents possible uses of a BI solution and which are the types of problems that BI can resolve. The second part of the article describes the SQL Server 2005 BI Workbench Platform, and the third part presents a real solution on business intelligence, named ProClarity, a solution that belongs to the Microsoft Corporation since April this year. Next to a brief particularization of the ProClarity Analytics Family, we tried to see on a specific study case (using an OLAP cube) what are the benefits of this BI solution. The study has the intention of pointing out the ProClarity solution as a particular BI solution, working together with SQL Server 2005. In order to explore the possibilities to answer company’s problems, we need to be able to take better and quickly decisions.
